I wish I could say I passed smoothly through my teenage years. Unfortunately, I lingered in that awkward stage for a long time.
Even now, as a woman in my (ahem) mid-thirties, I often feel like I don’t know who I am. I’ve been a wife for over a decade, and a mom for almost nine years. I’m a daughter, sister, and friend.
But I sometimes feel like I’m still that frizzy-haired, awkward teen with braces and thick glasses.
After years of doubting my worth, wondering who I was, and honestly, thinking I didn’t matter, the Lord started to do work in my heart.
He reminded me that I was worth His Son’s death on the cross. He created me specifically and for a purpose, and I am worth everything to Him.
My identity in Christ is about far more than what I’ve done or who I am–and all about Who He is, and what He’s done for me.

What Does My Identity in Christ Mean?
The Bible tells us that before we were saved, we were strangers and alienated from Christ. (Ephesians 2:11-12)
When we receive Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us. We are made new creations in Christ, and old things have passed away.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV
In the past we were sinners, but now we are saved by His grace. We aren’t the old creature we used to be. We have a new identity in Christ.
Knowing Your Identity in Christ
Knowing who you are in Christ changes everything. You walk with new confidence because you know God loves you. The opinions of others don’t bother you anymore.
As Christian women, it is important to understand our identity in Him! The truth is, God has a purpose for each of us, and we want to live it out fully! The only way is to know who you are in God’s eyes.

Ephesians 1:4–You Are Chosen.
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
No part of your life is an accident. God chose the family you would be born into, your personality, and your character traits. He chose the children He would give you.
He has a specific purpose for your life, and He made you exactly as you should be to fulfill it.
1 Peter 2:9–You Are Called
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
We often hear about pastors, evangelists, or missionaries who talk about being “called.” But the truth is, every one of us is called.
God called us out of the darkness of this world and into His light. And He wants us to share that light with others.
As Christian moms, God has called us to share the Gospel with our families, lost family members, and everyone we come in contact with.
Sometimes we feel like our work is not important. But when we remember that God called us into this work, it changes our perception of what we’re doing. Being a mom is a ministry.
Proverbs 31:10–You Are Valuable
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
When we look at our lives and base our value on how much money we earn, how much we are able to accomplish, or the ever-rising number on a scale, we don’t seem very important.
But when you remember that you are so valuable to God He sent His Son to die for you, everything changes.
A woman who loves God and lives her life to serve Him is as valuable as a gem. Not because of who she is–but because of her service for Him.
As stay-at-home moms, we can sometimes feel unimportant because we’re not out in the workforce. But the truth is, our work is so important! We are raising the future generation of Christ-followers.
John 8:32–You Are Free.
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Listen, sometimes being a stay-at-home mom is a mind-numbing, lonely, and downright frustrating job. And it can cause us to live in discouragement.
But the truth is that we are free in Christ. We are not bound by our circumstances. And no matter what this world throws at us, we know that God has overcome it all.
When we remember that we are free in Christ, it changes everything. We can face each day with hope and joy because we know that nothing can separate us from His love.

Psalm 139:1–You Are Known.
O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
Each of us has the desire to be truly known by someone else. But we also have this little fear that if people really knew us, they wouldn’t like us at all.
But God knows us better than anyone else, and yet He still loves us. Failures, flaws, and all.
Psalm 139:16–You Are Seen.
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
During the pandemic in 2020, my husband was an essential worker. In fact, he ended up working six days a week. Our church and most other events were canceled. I know most people can relate!
I went multiple days at a time where I saw no one except my kids, and my husband at bedtime. I started feeling invisible really fast.
Being a mom is that way sometimes. But God always sees you. He sees you when you’re up all night with the baby, when homeschool isn’t going so well and when you’re cleaning up pretzel crumbs out of the floor for the sixth time.
Jeremiah 31:3–You Are Loved.
The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
“No one loves you.” Has that thought ever crept its way into your mind? It’s a lie from Satan.
There are a lot of people who love you–your husband, children, and friends for sure. But even if no one else cared, He still would.
God loves you now and forever. In fact, He loved you so much, He sent His Son to die for you so He could have you forever in Heaven with Him.
Pretty amazing, right?
Psalm 139:13–You Are Beautiful.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
When I was a young teenager, a well-meaning adult told me I had a large forehead, and shouldn’t grow out my bangs. For many years, every time I looked at myself in the mirror all I saw was my forehead.
Most of us are very aware of our flaws, and they come even more glaring when someone points them out to us.
But God sees us as beautiful because we are His handiwork. We are fearfully and wonderfully made!
The next time you look in the mirror, remember that you are beautiful–just the way you are.
Proverbs 31:25–You Are Strong.
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
The world tells us that to be strong women, we have to be independent and self-sufficient. But the Bible tells us that strength and honor are found in humility and dependence on God.
When we surrender our lives to Christ, He gives us His Spirit to dwell in us. And His Spirit is all-powerful! So when we feel weak, it’s because we’re trying to work in our own strength.
Remember, you are strong in Christ. Lean on Him and trust that He will give you everything you need to face each day.
Proverbs 14:1–You Are Wise.
Every wise woman buildeth her house, but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
The world makes us feel foolish for choosing to stay at home, raise kids and honor our husbands. But the Bible tells us that a woman who invests her time in her home and family is wise.
So don’t be afraid to be different from the world. Doing things God’s way is always wise.
Isaiah 43:18-19–You Are Redeemed.
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in a rut? Like no matter what you do, you can’t seem to get ahead? The good news is that God can redeem your past and give you a fresh start.
He wants to do new things in your life, but first He has to clear away the old things that hold you back. That means you have to get rid of the negative thoughts Satan puts in your mind.
Whenever you’re faced with thoughts that you can’t raise your kids, can’t share the Gospel with a lost person, or can’t serve God in your home, those are lies from your enemy.
God says you can do those things and more. Too often we let those lies hold us back from really serving God. But He wants to redeem those thoughts, and use your life for His glory.
2 Timothy 1:7–You Are Brave.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
The world around us is full of fear. Social media and news outlets breed it in us. But that fear doesn’t come from God.
He’s given us a spirit of power, love, and sound mind. So instead of being afraid, we can be bold and courageous for Christ.
We can tell people about His love, even when they don’t want to hear it. We can trust that He will take care of us, even when the world is falling apart around us–and that seems like it’s happening more and more!
Why My Identity in Christ is So Important
If someone told you a lie about yourself every day, how long would it take to believe it? Even if you never fully believed it yourself, you would always wonder, “Is this how others see me?”
And that’s what Satan does to us as Christian women. He tries to convince us that we don’t matter, have nothing to contribute, and will never be able to do anything for God.
This is why it is so important to understand your identity in Christ. To know who you are to Him. Know that He has a plan and wants to use you.
