How to Fill Your Mind With God’s Word

I recently went through a very dark time in my life. I have always been a worrier, but I have never been faced with what most would consider “anxiety.”

During that time, though, I was was faced with constant worry about the future. At times I felt as if I could hardly breath. One night I sat at the island in my kitchen with tears pouring down my face. I knew that I couldn’t live that way with constant fear and worry.

I have an app on my phone that allows me to listen to Bible verses surrounding a topic. I chose “verses for when you’re feeling fearful.” It only took a few minutes for my fear to fade away.

No, the situation had not changed. But somehow it didn’t seem quite so dark as before. I can’t explain it to you. If you have never experienced it, you man not even believe that it’s true.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7

Fear tells me that God is not in control. Fear says I have to try to fix things on my own. But God says that He does not send fear. Fear is a lie of Satan.

From the beginning of time, Satan has lied to women. He does it so cunningly that we often don’t even see it happening. And too often we live in those lies instead of believing the truth of God’s Word.

When you fill your mind with God’s Word, Satan cannot stay.

The Truth Will Set You Free

In Ephesians 6:11-17, Paul tells Christians to put on the whole armour of God. Nearly all of the parts are defensive weapons: the helmet of salvation, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith.

God offers us one method of offense: the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Using the Scriptures is the only way to fight against Satan. In order to use this weapon, you must fill your mind with God’s Word.

John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” His Word is the truth that fights against the lies of Satan.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4:8

God’s Word is the truth. Think on that when Satan begins to fill your mind with the lies of discouragement, fear, doubt, jealousy, bitterness and sin. Fill your mind with God’s Word so that there is no room for Satan’s lies.

Fill Your Mind with God’s Word by Reading Your Bible Daily

I know that as a busy mom, it can be difficult to find time in your day to have quiet time with God. But as a Christian, you really can’t afford to miss it.

You don’t need to spend an hour reading chapter after chapter. In fact, if you’re like me, your focus probably wouldn’t last that long.

Instead, focus on finding one passage or verse that can offer strength for the day. I use a Proverbs reading plan, and read one chapter every day. Even though I have done this practice for years, I still find little nuggets of wisdom there.

I also love the Psalms, and the Epistles. Yes, there may be a day in your life when you can indulge in deep study. But if this isn’t it, at least make a habit of reading some each day.

Fill Your Mind with God’s Word by Writing Scripture

Scripture writing is a great practice. Whenever you write something down, it’s easier to remember. Writing Bible verses also gives you the opportunity to read the verse or passage again and again.

I love Bible verse cards, and use them often, but it’s also meaningful to me to write the verses in my own handwriting. In the past I’ve used pretty notebooks to write all of my verses. It’s nice to go back and read over verses that have been influential to me.

Fill Your Mind with God’s Word by Displaying It Around Your Home

Scripture art is so beautiful and readily available. You can easily find it online (or print it for free in the SAHM Resource Library!). Maybe you have a vinyl machine, or are great a calligraphy and can make something beautiful for your walls.

Scripture cards are also a fun way to display Scripture. You can stick them in your mirror, use them as bookmarks or even display them on mini easels. Keeping Scripture where you can see it often will keep it near your mind all the time. I especially love reading encouraging Bible verses.

Fill Your Mind with God’s Word Through Music

Have you ever read a Bible verse, and thought, “That sounds familiar?” Many hymns and other Christian songs are based on Scripture, some more loosely than others.

Singing to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.

Ephesians 5:19

Whenever you’re feeling sad, overwhelmed, or discouraged, hymns are a great way to boost your spirits. The purpose of a hymn is to draw our hearts and minds to Him, and I promise it will make a difference.

Clear Your Mind to Hear God

The world is full of noise. Our minds are full of noise. If you want to really fill your mind with God’s Word, you have to clear it from the noise.

What does that even mean? When you’re a mom, locking yourself in a quiet room alone isn’t possible. But clearing your mind doesn’t necessarily mean finding silence. (Good thing, right?)

Instead it means clearing your mind of things that don’t matter. It might mean taking a break from social media, listening to only hymns or spiritual songs for a few days, participating in a Scripture writing process, or anything else that brings your focus to God’s Word.

Let Scripture Change Your Life

Scripture has the power to change your life. It’s not an understatement.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

God’s Word cuts through everything else, and goes straight to the heart. It discernse you thoughts and motives. It’s powerful.

It can take your worry, turmoil and fear, and somehow turn them into peace. Fill your heart with God’s Word to experience the benefits of His truth and life.
